About the Speakers
Michael Nielsen is a writer working on a book about how the internet is changing the way scientific discoveries are made. In a past life Michael was a theoretical physicist who co-authored the standard text on quantum computing -- now one of the ten most cited books in the history of physics. He's written 60 scientific papers, including one of the first experimental demonstrations of quantum teleportation, named as one of Science Magazine's 'Breakthroughs of the Year' for 1998. He was a Fulbright Scholar, the Tolman Fellow at Caltech, and Foundation Professor of Quantum Information Science at the University of Queensland in Australia. In 2008, Michael gave up a tenured academic position at the Perimeter Institute (Canada) to write his book. His next project will be a technology startup. He blogs at http://michaelnielsen.org/blog
Cynthia Cleto is the Global Manager for eBooks at Springer Science+Business Media. She is responsible for market penetration, product development, and other commercial aspects of the Springer eBook Collection. Prior to Springer, Cynthia worked to help launch a number of innovative products in the electronic space - these consist of A&I and Chemistry Databases for Elsevier as well as Thieme Medical Publishers. Before entering the STM Publishing field, Cynthia trained and worked as a supervisor and graduate student in Genomics laboratories at McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
Derk Haank was appointed CEO of Springer Science+Business Media in February 2004. After
obtaining a degree in economics and business administration and spending a few years as a researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, he began his career in publishing in 1986 at Elsevier Science, where he held various management positions, spending part of this time based in the UK. He was appointed CEO of Misset, Elsevier's B-to-B division, in 1991. From 1998 to 2004, Derk was CEO of Elsevier Science and was also an Executive Board member at Reed Elsevier.
James R. Mouw is Assistant Director for Technical and Electronic Services at The University of
Chicago and has previously held positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Gardner-Webb College in North Carolina. He is also adjunct professor at Dominican University School of Library and Information Science (formerly Rosary College) where he teaches classes on serials management and academic library administration. Mr. Mouw holds a B.A. in Music from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan and an MLS from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. An active member of ALA and ALCTS, he is past-chair of the Acquisitions Section of ALCTS, and is a member of numerous ALA and ALCTS committees. Mouw is a regular contributor to library journals, focusing on issues related to the acquisition of serial titles and the linking of electronic resources. His most recent interests include the development and delivery of e-books, library standards, licensing, and faceted browse interfaces. He is a frequent presenter at library conferences, including the Charleston Conference, NISO meetings and the Society for Scholarly Publishing. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Library Collections Acquisitions and Technical Services and was previously a member of the editorial board of Serials Review. He is a member of several publisher, vendor and information industry advisory boards including Project COUNTER and CrossRef.

T. Scott Plutchak has been the Director of the Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) since 1995. He received his Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin, and was a post-graduate Library Associate at the US National Library of Medicine from 1983-84. From 1999 through 2005 he was the editor of the Journal of the Medical Library Association (JMLA), and recently completed a three-year term on MLA's Board of Directors. He is a founding member of the Chicago Collaborative, and leads the international librarian rock band, The Bearded Pigs.
Ian Rowlands is Reader in Scholarly Communication at University College London (UCL) and teaches on the new MA Publishing programme. A life scientist originally, Ian became interested in the world of libraries and publishing upon graduation, and worked in the database publishing sector for ten years before joining academia in 1993. His research interests focus on journal publishing, information-seeking behaviour and bibliometrics all of which find outlets through the work of the CIBER Group at UCL.
As Chief Research Fellow, David Worlock is a member of Outsell's leadership team and uses his
extensive information industry experience to support Outsell's strategy and business objectives worldwide. David chairs Outsell's Europe-based Leadership Councils, a member-service for CEOs and senior executives of media publishing and information-provider firms. A respected thought leader, he frequently speaks at industry conferences and advises clients worldwide. David founded Electronic Publishing Services Ltd. (EPS) in 1985, a research and consultancy company working with the digital content industry in developing strategies for products and markets in consumer and business sectors. Outsell acquired EPS in 2006.
